Target on Monday named Mark Weinstein as its chief marketing and guest experience officer, effective immediately, according to a press release. The executive will report directly to Target CEO Michael Fiddelke.

Weinstein will be responsible for developing how consumers experience and connect with Target across channels, culture and community. He will also oversee the company’s retail media network, Roundel, and its marketplace offering, Target+.

“Mark has a proven ability to understand what consumers value and turn those insights into brand connections that feel relevant and personal,” Fiddelke said in a statement. “His leadership will help us elevate the guest experience across every interaction with Target, deepening existing relationships, welcoming new guests and driving continued growth.”

Weinstein on Sept. 10 stepped down from his position as global chief marketing officer at Hilton, where he oversaw the hotelier’s 28 brands, its Hilton Honors loyalty program and its luxury brands. The executive spent more than 16 years at Hilton and had been CMO since 2020.

Target’s comparable sales jumped 3.8% in Q2 while traffic increased 3.6%. The company has not had a CMO since current chief operating officer Lisa Roath was reassigned from CMO to chief merchandising officer of food, essentials and beauty early last year.

“I think about the opportunity to be even more in culture and conversation by fully connecting all marketing through a consistent brand platform, more fully harnessing the power of loyalty and personalization, and really defining our in-store and digital guest experience of the future,” Weinstein said in a company blog post about the Target appointment.

Target’s Beauty Studio launch has a representation problem

Call Target corporate communications and the Beauty Studio marketing team this week with a small bench of reputation comms and inclusive-marketing consultants who can pressure-test launch messaging, founder narratives and upcoming brand announcements before the Sept. 10 rollout.

The launch plan and assortment are already in market, but the criticism creates immediate work around reputation, founder communications, inclusive marketing review and the yearlong pipeline of new brand drops.
